A Bridge Between

Two Epochs

The year was 1902, the place Delhi. Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah, His Highness Aga Khan III was to deliver his presidential address to the All India Muhammadan Education Conference. Mawlana Nazir Ahmad stood up to introduce him. Overwhelmed by the eminent personality of the 24 year old president, he quoted a verse of the renowned sufi poet and musician, Amir Khusraw-i Dehlawi:

āfāqhā gardīda am mihr-i butān warzida am
bisyār khūbān dīda am ammā tū chīzī dīgarī

all over the world have I roamed, many an idol have I worshipped
many beauties did I behold,
but you are altogether unique
